World-class collections in the Civic District

The Civic District is home to the largest public collection of Singapore and Southeast Asian art, set inside two grand colonial buildings.

Start with

  • National Gallery Singapore for Southeast Asian modern art
  • National Museum of Singapore for the story of the nation, from early trade to today
  • Asian Civilisations Museum, by the river, for the cultures that shaped the region

Insider tip: Many museums run free or discounted entry for residents but charge visitors. Check current prices and special exhibitions online.

Peranakan heritage

Pastel houses and a blended culture

The Peranakans blend Chinese and Malay traditions in food, fashion and architecture. Katong and Joo Chiat are the place to see it.

Look out for

  • Pastel shophouses with decorated tiles and carved shutters
  • Kebaya clothing, beaded slippers and porcelain at heritage shops
  • Nyonya kueh and dishes such as laksa and ayam buah keluak

Insider tip: Walk the streets of Joo Chiat in the morning and finish with a plate of Nyonya food.

Temples & places of worship

Faiths side by side

Temples, mosques and churches sit within a short walk of each other, a visible sign of Singapore’s multicultural identity.

Respectful visiting

  • Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered
  • Remove shoes where signs or shoe racks tell you to
  • Ask before taking photos of worshippers, and keep voices low

Insider tip: Some places close to visitors during prayers or festivals. Check opening times before you go.
