Getting around

Easy, cool and well connected

Trains, buses, boats and shaded walkways make Singapore one of the simplest cities in Asia to navigate.

MRT & buses

The train network does most of the work

Singapore’s MRT is clean, air-conditioned and easy to follow. Together with the bus network it reaches almost every attraction in this guide.

How to ride

  • Tap in and out with a contactless bank card or a mobile wallet, with no ticket needed
  • Trains run from early morning until around midnight, with frequent services at peak times
  • Eating and drinking are not allowed on trains or in stations, and fines apply

Insider tip: Download a transit app for live train and bus times. Offline maps also help when your signal drops underground.

Changi Airport

From plane to city in under an hour

Changi is one of the world’s best-loved airports, and it is well connected to the city by train, bus and taxi.

Getting to town

  • The MRT runs from the airport to the city, usually the cheapest and most predictable option
  • Taxis and ride-hailing cars wait outside arrivals, with a surcharge on airport pick-ups
  • Leave extra time on departure day to enjoy the gardens and shops before you fly

Insider tip: On a long layover, check the rules for leaving the terminal and storing your bags before you plan a city trip.

Traditional bumboat cruising the Singapore River at golden hour03

By water & on foot

Slow down on the river and the waterfront

Some of the best ways to see the centre are the slowest. Walk the covered links and boardwalks, or take a boat along the river.

Worth trying

  • River cruises in a traditional bumboat between Clarke Quay and Marina Bay
  • The waterfront promenade around Marina Bay, flat and good for strollers
  • Ferries from the Marina South area to the southern islands

Insider tip: Midday heat is strong. Plan outdoor walks for early morning or evening, and use the air-conditioned links in between.
